PES 2009 Reviewed In Spain! *Translated!*
Spanish magazine Hobby Consolas is the first publication in the world to give an official verdict on PES 2009!
Many thanks to jjoseca and Van-Pi, as well as the ever present ThomasGoal for the news!
So, to the scans!:
Now obviously its all in Spanish, but its safe to say the ‘92′ at the bottom of the last page is easily translatible
So a fantastic start for PES 2009 then, we should know what PSM3 gave the game in the next few days. For now enjoy the news pics from the game, while we try our best to get you a full translation!
In the mean time, here’s a quick translation. Thank you to das1925 for this!
From the article:
- 8 different cameras, and each of them at 3 heights
- It also mentions that all 32 CL teams have full kits and names
- Players change facial expression when they lose the ball, they scream
- A.I. has improved very much according to the article
- The players are very much like the real counterparts
- Great illumination and weather effects
- 19 Stadiums
- 8 Players, 4 Online for regular match
- 7 players, 8 online for Become a Legend
- The Spanish commentators are great
- For kit editing, add images for Logos AND sponsors
- Share replays with friends through the Internet
The good:
“The Saga has reached a level of simulation that is hard to improve on”
“Smoother animations but Mechanical”
Conclusion:
“The Saga has made a huge step forward, although it has not yet found the ’sweet spot’ on the new consoles”
The Bad:
“The game engine is stuck on last year’s, with improvements”
“Fewer Licenses”
The general feeling of the reviewer is that aside the graphics and Licenses which are better in FIFA, the ‘legendary’ playability of PES remains.
It would be nice to have the review of FIFA that is in the same magazine.

@ Adam: what’s so weird about 32 teams being fully licensed? they maintained the licenses they had last year along with a couple more. the only new license in the CL mode will probably be Zenit and if I saw correctly, Slavia prague. extremely disappointed with the news.. last year they took 100 steps back in terms of gameplay. this year -you guys say, I haven’t played yet, obviously- they brought back the gameplay, they lost a very important league (I wouldn’t mind if they lost the dutch league instead), they got a CL license and just when I thought: great, this year we’ll get a rocking gameplay and a chance to play with fully licensed teams participating in CL, all these thoughts turn into dreams for the future (far future, too) because you can easily predict who will be in the team mix: 4 spanish +4 italian +4 english +3 french +3 dutch +2 portuguese +1 croatian +2 turkish +2 greek +2 russian +2 scottish +1 ukrainian and a couple more from sweden maybe, czech or switzerland. if you’re ’smart’ enough you’ll realise they got zero new licenses except for zenit and slavia. kiss german, extra portuguese, shakhtar and a couple more teams we liked goodbye. in terms of licensing, konami took 100 steps backwards this year
Nick X commented

the magazine said 32 teams licensed in the CL. Just to jog your memory, Chelsea and Arsenal arent licensed, so how can the 32 teams be licensed?
Your way of working our new licensing is very funny. But if you mean they have less licenses this year is probably correct. But I’m not sure why that would mean Konami have taken 100 steps back, as licenses can be rectified via edit mode.

- “7 players, 8 online for Become a Legend” -> 7players (?) = 4vs4 online BaL ?

3 heights for the camera…. well that’s a step forward. Not the leap I was hoping for…. which was complete customization of zoom and height as in the last 6 FIFAs.
Gameplay sounds great. But animations, as usual NEED AN OVERHAUL.
Overall very positive and reassuring.

Re: the licenses, is it not possible that all 32 teams are indeed fully licensed, but ONLY WITHIN the Champions League mode? Therefore in exhibition or ML mode, you would be stuck with the non-licensed Chelsea and Arsenal etc.

The author of allsvenskapes.blogg.se has played the latest version(supposedly) of pes2009 in copenhagen. You can see on this video which teams are included in the CL-mode. And as you can see for your self and as confirmed from Caniggia himself(author), there’s a limited amount of teams licensed and even included due to the exclusive rigths of EA.
This really sucks and makes the license of CL kind of useless if you ask me.

First of all to the above comment - does it not say that he has played an 85% version. Secondly if we are to go for the teams only shown on CL mode, then where the hell are Liverpool and Marseille? - both were seen in the CL trailer. Adam I do think that Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern and the rest of them will be licensed, but only in the Champions League mode. Simply put the video we have seen is not the final version.

Adam you seem very defensive about the idea of all 32 champs league teams being licenced, what have they got to gain by ‘lying’ about it?… like ‘fanatico’ said, is it inconcievable that they could be playable within a SEPERATE part of the game, like in the Brian Lara cricket games? Thats what i would assume a “fully licenced champions league mode” to mean.

I asked Caniggia(who have recently played pes2009, the latest version, in copenhagen) if those teams on the video were the only ones that would be in the final version. and he said “So far those teams you saw is the only included in the game. The english teams Arsenal and Chelsea are not allowed to be included neither are the German teams Bremen and Bayern Munich”.
Mark his words “so far”. Though this answer doesn’t tell if he have really asked someone at Konami if these teams won’t be in the game or if he just assumes that will be the case. So there still is a chance that all 32 teams will be in the game and fully licensed, even though i wouldn’t bet on it.

Gameplay seems solid to me, they (Konami) have had me worried there for a while but now that we really know what’s in the game and seen solid gameplay videos, it’s clear they finally pulled it together in the end. PES 2009 will keep the “legendary” status
Have to quickly mention Fifa 09, the Trick videos on youtube… OMG that sh*t is insane! Imagine what would happen if PES 2010 incorperated those kind of tricks. Jezus the whole gameplay basics would change I think…. just really insane trick stuff on Fifa 09 (still shocked :O)

I can’t talk for everyone but me personally I like to have flare in my game in a realistic beneficial way with out it becoming FIFA street.
I mainly watch the Serie A and Spanish League I understand the English league does not promote flare and individual skill and sticks to basics.
There are certain teams in Serie A/Spanish League that like to entertain and I wish I could be able to do that too in PES with excellent individual players it would also definitely add a surprise unpredictable factor to the game

as for all the “yes they will be licensed” - “no they wont”, i think u lot should just take on board what adam is sayin, if konami have told him it aint happenin, then it aint happenin. i dunno if id say the mag was lying… bit harsh - maybe something was lost in translation… however like any hardcore pes fan, couldnt care less, graphics n kits mean nothing, fifa can lap up the glory in that department, gameplay is king - pes is king. <— i like that, konami can use that as a new slogon… hahaha

Can’t believe some of these “they’re all licensed” posts. Like Swannea said, those are just the badges of 32 clubs in PES 2009. Clearly you can choose who’s in the UCL when you start that mode but all the UCL clubs are NOT licensed. Can’t believe people claiming to see things that simply aren’t there.
I wish all the clubs were licensed, but they’re clearly not and these are the sort of baseless rumours that get people expecting too much and then hating on the game when they finally realise it’s not true. Let’s focus on a really good review and some fantastic pics & videos.

Actually, the 32 teams AREN’T licenced, if you check the thrid page, in the lower left corner there’s a picture of a Livelpool player and a text that says:
“Los equipos de la Champions, como Manchester o Liverpool, aparecen en el juego, aunque el resto de la liga inglesa esta formado por equipos ficticios, como el North London (Arsenal)”
Translated, ti says something laike this:
The UCL teams, such as Manchester or Liverpool, appears in the game, but the rest of the english league is formed with fictitious teams, like North London (Arsenal).
In other words, the article says hat there will be the 32 UCL teams, but not all of them will be licensed, not bug deal.
Anyway, i would like to read another review, Hobby Consolas isn’t exactly a serious magazine for the spanish readers (since what i read in spanish forums).

@ Dieci: I agree, for a PES site there is a lot of negativity but im glad in a way because Konami need to get the message - every year they stuff up PES ppl will look elsewhere as the competition has got better.
@ Adam: Some ppl just dont listen mate, everyone is just hanging on to a bit of hope of more licensed teams…your the man with the inside knowledge and ppl know this so if you say it aint gonna happen then it aint gonna happen - Simple!
@ Xero82: About licenses, unless you make your own OF dont grill people who go on about the licences (this is to all non-editors out there). If it became illegal to trade OF on all formats would you be able to make one for yourself? How long would that take if every team on the game was unlicensed? Exactly…the more licenses the better, its less editing for real editors.

@ Nick and you guys who arn’t pleased with the licenses. The main thing about the licenses issue is that PES is a japanese game. In japan, the international version of “winning eleven” (or “we-ele”) is not very popular, the J-League one actually sells more copies. Japanese are very nationalistic and J-league is the supremacy. They don’t care much about foreign football (unless their countrymen are participating in those leagues). Japanese don’t know or care much about Man-united or liverpool but they all support Celtic just because Nakamura (Japan international player) is playing in the side. Moreover, Konami and Jap game developers in general care more about domestic market than the overseas one. They develop the game to feed the domestic market and do not concern much about the feed back from overseas. Even the development team has just found out recently (a few years back) that “oh our game is actually being quite popular in Europe!” Thus they has never (and probably will never) felt the need to go out and grab the lecenses from the notable leagues just to make the game sells better “outside” japan. Surely and ultimately PES will lose out to FIFA. The marketing strategy is so different. FIFA go all out to conquer the world but Konami is just content to be a successful developer in their home country. After all, FIFA don’t have J-league license, no?
mslaw commented

Another thing about the licenses (I’m an IP lawyer). The right to give licenses is an exclusive right of the TM and copyright holder. However, naturally the license owner would want to give out licenses to as many parties as possible because it means more channels of revenue. But I recon that FIFA must have invested immensely to force the EPL (as well as other league) to enter into an exclusive deal with them. So it is FIFA who is evil. Is it an act of unfair competition? Depends on view, but I think it will be hard to bring a law suit becuase although it is exclusive, here we are talking only about footie game market (only major player being FIFA and KONAMI. Other parties from other industries aren’t barred from securing licenses from EPL. This is quite different from the SKY Sport scenario, where they are the only one with the ability to broadcast the matches. After all securing exclusive license is just another way of taking a lead in business. IMO, Konami is the one to blame for being so complacent with their status and never really tried to take the lead, atleast when they could.
Sorry for headache stuff guys, just wanna share some thought.

When Konami claims that the UCL is fully licensed, it’s extremely weak and disappointing if they wont even include the REAL 32 teams in the game. Use a different name if they arent licenced but for gods sake..use the real teams. Otherwise its NOT the real Champions League and we might as well have used the normal Cup-mode + the Edit-mode to create our own CL-mode. I surely hope that the editing-people will make an option-file with the correct 32 CL teams - altho i think its very VERY badly done on Konamis part.
Konami shoulda written “Partly licenced CL” instead of using the strong word “fully” licenced CL when its clearly not.

Its just a renamed “Konami cup” with different intros!!! Konami have completely missed the point and wasted a good oportunity to bring at least some realism to the ML. There just seems to be a lot of confusion about the CL license. I might even do a post on it to re-inform, and again mention it on the podcast.
The CL license isnt really a license, its probably explaining it as an official mode. So it has all the artwork, the music and layout of the competition, but not having all the teams in.
That means (NOW READ PROPERLY!) that if the team isnt licensed in the normal mode IT WONT be licensed in the CL mode. Same goes for teams that dont appear in the game. For e.g. Bayern Munich arent in the game, just because Konami have the CL mode doesnt mean they have them in.
The Bundesliga is exclusively EA’s, as is the Premiership and now La Liga. So you can blame a mixture of Konami’s laziness to keep hold of licenses, and EA’s desire to have only FIFA with official kits.

lets just remember ea have a serrrrrrrious amount of money compared to konami and therefore i imagine its hard for konami to compete but regardless we’ve been buying their games for years so when they add things like champions league mode they think “that mite help sell a few more copies as they are already buyin it without full licenses anyway”. ill say it again - it dont matter.. it does make me laugh people are gettin upset about pro not havin licenses when its never been about that, if u really, really, really want the full kits etc then do the flash gordon with ur 360 or just get the pc version… patch away… come on lighten up, its pro and the gameplay looks good, we should be praising the game not throwing all this negativity about.

But Adam..I apologize if its just me being not-so-wise or deaf or something…but couldnt Konami just call Bayern Munchen or Aalborg BK something else in the CL-mode (unlicenced), call the players Rubery etc. and then still include the same teams thats *actually IN* the Champions League this year?
I mean..its really Konamis fault for not including teams (in normal mode) who actually qualified for the CL this year. Thats what I’m a bit annoyed about…finally a real CL-mode..and yet still…then its far from accurate/real. (Unless we edit it ourselves..if thats even possible)

I understand now about it being a CL mode and not a licence so it won’t have fully licensed teams - message received!

They give 92 but say “The game engine is stuck on last year’s”. This means it’s 92 ONLY if last year’s edition was something around 90… which it wasn’t, at least not for me.

quick question lads.. have they implemented any form of swerve to the ball in the game? the one thing that really is missing for me is proper ball movement when shooting. They have it in free kicks so im not really sure why they dont put it in the game tbh.

The worst thing is it’s a separate mode.
You don’t qualify after ending in top 4 in the PL for example.
