PES 2008 Fails To Impress Joypad

It’s around this time of year that review scores all around Europe start to get published. As long as I can remember the PES series has always been a consistent performer, regularly scoring above 90%. Its usually a question of how many perfect scores it will rack up rather then if.

But things are different this year.

Always wanting to bring the fans news as it happens, we would of preferred to be telling you how well received PES 2008 was in its first review. Unfortunately that’s not the case. French magazine JOYPAD were the first guys to give their verdict on the game on the PS3 platform, and it turned out to be very critical. Scoring an unfamiliar 7/10, PES 2008 finds itself scored much lower than many (including us!) would of perceived.

Due to obvious reasons we cannot post the scans, but here’s a brief translation of the last paragraph in the review:

“In brief, even if we realise that Konami’s game maintains all of it’s essential qualities this year, it seems necessary to underline the fact that it settles for the bare minimum. The series have reached the end of a path, where it will need to look for new possibilities and a clean, precise break from it’s PS2 past. It needs to reflect a new way to explore the looks, playability and content that the newest technologies can provide.

Otherwise, the messiah may start to lose it’s following…

Even if it remains a good football game, PES2008 is too detached from it’s initial values, and mainly doesn’t offer any noticeable evolution. Yellow card…

W.E.N.B. should be receiving their copies very soon for review, expect our verdict along with many more media establishments in the coming weeks.

My personal view is that the magazine has been too critical, much like we were when we first played the game in Germany. After prolonged play the essence of what the game was trying to achieve in its experience prevailed and left this editor more than happy. There are many more review scores set to follow, I’m confident they will be much more positive in their verdict. Stay tuned!

Cheers to Airjoca, Greco29 & ThomasGOAL for this information!

Yours,

W.E.N.B. Team
