  8. Spot on ! Great game at its core , but has failed to adapt to the modern world of nextgen console and PC power. Animation, 8 direction movement and host of other gameplay parts. Invisible walls at thow in , and in BAL I found out that even when my team has a freekick there is a invisible wall surround the taker and I can’t get near him. Still has cpu taking control of some of your passing , players AI, stopping and turning away from passes and not reacting to loose balls and turning away from them. And the one that did my nut in , in BAL, playing through ball to a team mate well in the clear with cpu players some 18 yards to the side of him, he runs towards the ball and 2 yards from it , stops dead and stands in the hunched stance and waits until a cpu player get to the ball before moving again.

I love PES , and these points are not meant to rubbish the game I still love, but to get Seabass to fix them and move onto a new engine that will allow him to do just that.

If as reported he loves what he’s done? I don’t see 2010 being on a new engine and that is needed to get rid of these “cpu” glicthes and also to bring in new up to date animations and more than 8 direction of movement.

If he sticks to this old PS2 eninge or even a updated version of it (which I think is running PES2009) then these changes will not be possible and it will be more of the same next year again.

The more I read and listen to gaming sites and there PCs , the more I believe this new stance of Seabass that PES was never a football sim, is to cover the facts that he and his team and other japanese game developers and lagging way behind the west in terms of getting to grips with now current consoles and PCs and at present do not have the ability to make a true nextgen game.

  14. the fact that Seabass said he’s happy with this game scares the hsit outta me. It looks like PES 2010 is gonna get it’s ass handed to it by Fifa next year for sure

  16. Seabass’ team should move to the UK and experiance the real atmosphere of the football and fans, take on their opionions and make changes for this failing series

  17. “How dare they step their foot on the sacred super-realistic dope-like animation of PES2009…..”

… thinks one of the many PES fanboys on WENB. I remember a long discussion about FIFA’s highly complicated Adaptive Kinetics that realistically calculates and generates any animation you want at any time in FIFA09 based on real human body calculations and physical data.

This discussion didn’t sink will with the fans. I’m glad Gamespot gave PES2009 no more than a 7. I hope the sales of this game send Seabass the same message.

I want PES to grow into what it deserves to be on next-gen.

  18. Not sure he knew about the update for extra online space either. Do think he was quite dismissive about BAL.

Also, I slightly disagree with not being able to feel differences and having individuality in the players - I accept that to a point when they’re sprinting (as shown), but not when they’re doing everything else with the ball.

There were a few things they missed (good and bad). The menus to get online each time are ridiculous, and the Konami ID doesn’t help.

Felt a little bit like an attack, but then there is plenty to do so. Overall fair and in-depth review.

  20. the knight speaks truth

    although i enjoy the game

    both xbox’s are broken (n)

seabass does need to see that people are slagging of pes so he knows he has to pull up his socks for the next version of the game to make it even better , so that pes next year come out on top again

  23. its the game, its the game-play …the basis, the fundamental ! why change it so drastically when its near perfect and a masterpiece.

only the front end and more options(legends etc)…and seabass is doing that every year.

  24. Best review for this year’s game cos he actually mentioned the online portion which adam left out in his assessment.

Overall i think this year is THE pivotal point in football gaming history. If konami use PES 09 as the base for the 2010 game it’ll be over for them. I’m a fan of the game but i can’t help the truth when it’s staring me right in the face. This year’s FIFA is the first i’ve bought ever. I just hope this year’s PES isn’t the last.

    :-(

  25. ony criticism i have is the running animations (look too generic) and the defending not as tight as pes 5-6. maybe just me getting used to it.

  26. pes, is the only game where u can have patient builld up and time to think and make decisions on the ball.

fifa is too fast rushy, and response times are still bad.

  27. yeah i agree. the sprintiing is animation as a matter a fact all the animation is awful to stiff looking. and the fact that the ps2 edit mode is more in depth is ridicolous. Pro need to step there game up for next year. the players lack technique and taht is something FIFA will ahve over the pro the players hit the ball different inw hat ever situation there in.

  30. no pes for couple of weeks

both of my xbox’s are broke

anyway good review i agree with him although except one match online none of them had barely any lag i played like 8 matches but ye needs to be fixed for next year

i hope to see alot of changes for example

1/ sort out the oven gloves goalkeeping gloves

2./ sort out the nba shorts

3./ running style / basically animation

4/ online i dont want any lag , online chat , a proper way to exit without returning to dashboard unless i cant find one on my xbox

5/ bring back the likes of snow. dirt on kits

    6/ untucked shirts

    7/ better commentary

8./ crowd noise/ atmosphere needs to be chaged

9/ add champions leauge to master leauge

10/ change the skills from d pad back to original

11/ I have always wanted it more in depth with little things like managers etc on the sidelines! 4th officials, more atmostphere! half the time u can’t hear the crowd! like in italian matches for the stadium to look misty because of the flares things like this! I personally want the kits to move more look wet in the rain! get muddy, hang out when pulled on, and have a better trophy ceremony when u win trophies! thou I do think these issues wouldnt happen if the developers where british and really was passionate about football! (what I mean when I say british is that I don’t think japanese fans see football the way we do and wouldnt see what the game needed).

12/ But what I want, is a proper PES game with some of the features of old PES games, in 2010. And maybe even some truly new ones like:

The abilty to edit anything you want, like a hairstyle for example, you could be a top draw stylist and you want it to be perfect, you should be able to style it yourself and not pick default haristyles. (But they should still be in the game too)

    Random Selection Mode

    Challenge Training!

    Different Types of Font

    Licensed Music

    Extra Leagues and Teams

    Extra Licensing

    More Animations

    NO LAG!

Better A.I. (though its harder this year , maybe slightly better next year )

Maybe The Crowd Could Be Improved

Dynamic Weather (Weather changes as game goes on) I think that’s in 2009, but if it isn’t put that in

Attributes that actually represent the players ability in real life for example, Ashley Young of Aston Villa = Under rated

Konami need to get their thumbs out because we’ve seen what the company as a whole can do in games like MGS4. They need to get some of those guys on the PES 2010 team if it’s gonna get good press.

Animated people on sideline e.g. police, subs (goes for fifa as well, it will be so realistic and help that football atmosphere be created)

Celebrating with the team (when do we see players celebrating alone, rarely, have more celebrations as a team…same goes for fifa)

More sponsors (any old sponsors would do, just make it stop sayin Konami)

Control player reactions (imagine getting really angry and make everything become exciting and eventful with a near fight especially when getting a red card, will work wonders…..same goes for fifa

Improve goalkeeping (do I need to say anything)

Improve flags waving (make it look like audience are waving them, I once saw the stairs waving them)

Make the audience look at the ball (times Ive seen them celebrate when they are not looking at the goal….same goes for fifa)

When there is like a card being shown, make sure the rest of the players are looking at the incident, not just walking about like mindless idiots

    LISTEN TO THE FANS

Seabass really should have a look on some PES forums, even just 10mins browsing on here would give a good idea of what the fans wanted.

managers on sidelines maybe not all managers main ones, alex ferg , arsen etc

maybe when someone is injured bring physios on /stretcher in this time see players get some water talk to manager

    who agrees ?

  35. @Norsende

Ive got both games Fifa 09 and Pes2009.

so after playing both. yes fifa is a very good. But pes every since pes 5 is a deep customizable game from the edit mode to the very stastics of a player etc etc. fifa isnt deep enough. it doesnt have every little detail of the game of football. Also as in gameplay i prefer the more patient tactical build up of gameplay and decision making and making those timeless moves on the ball. Fifa as in the gameplay is very good but still isnt all whats its cracked up to be for example when u play a chipped lob forward the defenders 99% of the time head or retrieve the ball. In Pes …its all about the physics of the ball and velocity etc and positioning of the offensive player and the defender which determines where the ball will land.

So i prefer PES over FIFA. depends what ur taste is. but i know what pes offers in gameplay and customizations compared to fifa. which is all about modes and on-line play. For me its about the gameplay.

  36. hey pes_fan_021, its like u read my mind. all wat ive been dreaming about. just wanted to add a few to wat u said.
1 if u could see sub jogging along the line when he is waiting for the ball to go out befor referee lets him in
2 if they could also show the managers frustration in a replay wen a goal opportunity has been missed
3 if in an important final (mayb CLor worldcup) wn a player scores a late winning goal, he can actually take his shirt off! Or if not some players should take their shirts off after a match or xchange kits like in CL
i believe all these, plus those u gave, should really add a feel to the game. Seabass should come watch a barclays match, shish. and bring back the chalenge TRAINING! it was FUN!!!

    Rockba commented

  37. also when u shoot in fifa from distance it always balooooooooons over the goal all the time (100%). thats not the case in real football, u get some real crackers from even 40 yards now and again. …it all depends on positioning of the ball and player in Pes. Also the ball feels solid and weighty. In fifa u cant feel.

  38. u know, ive always wondered y this game is called pro EVOLUTION soccer.

  46. I’m speechless after I saw the online mode portion….

    really Konami?

Last year’s online play was horrendous.. and unforgivable. It’s BLEEPING 2008, online play isn’t a BLEEPING new concept, In fact, just make it work the the same way as PES2007 and 2006. They could have EASILY patched it. The fact that they didn’t care enough to work on a simple concept of non-ridiculous online play… is why I don’t buy that Seabass AND his cronies are anything more than SCAM ARTISTS

That was bad enough, now … after SPECIFICALLY saying they paid attention to it… it still does these horrioble things? Wow… do they just not give a crap? The game is nothing to me without online mode.

And you know what, I’m tired of this attitude around the forums that hating konami’s latest 3 offerings has to be explained by pointing out how great FIFA is. You know what… FIFA sucks too, and I hate Konami for making me have to play FIFA.

    BLEEP you konami

    GITM commented

  47. i agree with your points also rockba

i dont think it will be possible for sebass as he needs a new engine for more space slots to put a majority of these, so in next years i would like to see all the little dumb things taken away and put the good things back and things both you and i have mentioned but unless a new engine comes i cant see it happening im afraid

but will have to wait and see i hope he sees reviews and the criticism so he know he has to work harder and brings more people to work on the game

also seeing subs run along the touchline jogging and stuff , like yesterday for instance aston villa vs ajax if seabass would just watch a match like that and take ideas

also a different atmosphere in diffrent matches like italian with flares and smoke gives it a dark groggy kind of feel this would be a good addition

anybody has any other things please share , we should put a list together of the main things we want and somehow get it to seabass

and i agree with KAS shooting in fifa is way of it always goes over this is why i think the shooting / ball physics is better in pes u can feel it when u cross and pass , they just needs to takeaway this stiffness and give more control of things and throws ins no invisible force fields u should be able to be as close or far away as possible

  48. Hi just would like to know, is the option file you guys creating coming on tomorrow the 25th or on sunday the 26th. Thanks.

    Gunner4life commented

  49. I adored PES5, I loved PES6 and I was even willing to accept that PES2008 had its issues. I played PES2008 and Fifa 08 (as my first fifa in about 5 years) equally, before any bias issues are raised…

The issue of the Champions League license is actually a very big issue. What if they had claimed they had the premier league license, but actually only had two properly named teams with the correct kits? There would be outrage. I was honestly expecting to at least have the top 4 EPL clubs thanks to Konami having this license… Im pretty laid back about these things but it is just blatant misrepresentation and I am actually furious about it.

People talking about Edit mode, dont be silly. The fact you have to spend days in Edit mode just to make the bloody thing playable says all that needs to be said really, and you should not be required to do it (nor should you have to find OFs yourself online). The transfers are so out of date its unbelivable, and would be laughable if I hadn’t shelled out almost £40 for this crap. Fifa automatically updates in seconds.

Online mode didn’t even work when I was trying it two days ago. After spending about 15 minutes to finally make it into a lobby, I failed to connect with an opponent and just hung to the point where I had to restart my PS3. After this point I couldn’t even log back into online. I must have spent 30 minutes trying to get the thing working. Fifa takes approximately 15 seconds from the first menu to be selecting your team for an online game.

I just wish a reviewer would come out and be completely honest and let Konami know how it is. This review is okay, but it lets Konami off way too lightly on a lot of issues. If this game was released now under a different title than PES, it wouldnt be scoring more than 6/10. If you are willing to accept all of its many faults to give it a score greater than that, you are deluded. Its an absolute disgrace.

Some of the issues in this game are common issues from 5-10 years ago in the video industry which have long been banished - the fact PES has so many of these faults is an absolute joke.

I bought the game wanting to love it, but its just bloody awful. It really is. I leave no room for personal opinions in this - only the utterly deluded will think otherwise. This is half the game that Fifa is.

    deathcab1 commented

  60. Yes, the review is right in “generall” about PES 2009.

But one thing really bothers me. To say PES 2009 is just PES 2008 with a few improvements is totally not understanding what PES stands for. To explain myself better, we need to know PES 2008 is totally NOT what the series has long stood for. As a series in a whole, PES 2009 is only a minor update. However, compared to 2008, the simple fact that PES 2009 plays a lot more like what they used to be is a HUGE difference.

Never was graphics, licenses and game modes a strong point for the series. We all accepted that and kept on playing for the love of the game from a gameplay point of view. Yes, the next gen shift and even PES 2009 may have only made minor leaps in terms of licenses, number of stadiums, game modes, graphics, online play, etc. but the gameplay is NOT the same as PES 2008. And regardless of whether you like how the game plays, gameplay is the core of the PES/WE series.

Surprising to see Gamespot be spot on most of their comments yet say PES 2009 is just like PES2008. Even with my love for soccer games, PES 2008 to me is a taboo. I could care less even if it had all the stadiums you could think of, all the licenses and faces, and a no-lag online play…but with the same gameplay.

The game play is great! I played both Fifa and PES, I love the game play on PES better. However, I have to agree with everyone that the graphics are not up to scratch! I played the game on my Sony 1080P HD TV and I can see jagged edges on players and it looks amature. Do you guys get this as well?
